Murzakevich (1837, 61) was the first to notice the testimony of Oderico. Considering the uncertain origin of the inscription, we could hypothesize that
the Greek text was originally inscribed under the images of the coats of arms and was then mechanically moved by Oderico or his predecessor onto the coat of
arms (suggestion of D. Feissel, expressed in personal communication). At the same time, Greek inscriptions on western coats of arms are known in Late Byzantine epigraphy:
Feissel, Philippidis-Braat 1985, № 86 (Patras, 1426 C.E.) и CIG IV 8774 (Elbasan, 1358–1388), and in the latter the same word σημάδια is used.
Lion with a star is not attested in Genoese epigraphy, so we may hypothesize that originally a different object, for example, a lily was in the lion's claw. In terms of historical probability, a Genoese inscription at Inkerman could appear only in 1434, during the Genoese capture of the Theodorite fortress Kalamita by the fleet of Carlo Lomellino.
1–2. On the use of accusative instead of possessive genitive, see V 243.
3-4. Apparently, Oderico understood ΠΑΥΣ as a form of παύομαι, whence his translation “tolte,” that is, "taken." A.I. Papadopoulo-Kerameus (see Latyshev 1901) proposed to preserve the beginning of line 2 as it is recorded in the original (see apparatus criticus), but this is not a very happy solution.
